intellectual tools extend the brain's abilities

Humans have always (at least in recorded history) invented tools and methods for extending the abilities of our imperfect minds: mnemonics to aid memory, writing to supplement it, modes of mathematical analysis, drawings and graphs and thought experiments, analogies and metaphors and laymen's explanations and the subreddit Explain Like I'm Five. The invention of calculus made entire classes of mathematical and physical problems suddenly tractable that hadn't been. All of these are tools which have made things which were in one degree or another difficult to understand, easier to understand, and by doing so widened the range and number of minds that could grasp and engage with them.
